how long to wait
« on: June 18, 2011, 19:35 »
I have had my girls for three weeks now.  A ginger Warren, Columbine, Speckledy, and a Rhode Rock.  All settled in well and seem happy,  however we have yet to have any eggs from them,  The farmer we got them from said it may take up to two weeks but now I am starting to worry i am doing something wrong.  Today i have put a golf ball in there nesting box as read on here so fingers crossed but any advice would be greatly appreciated

Hello there Newbie  :)
I'm pretty sure you're not doing anything wrong.  Hens will start to lay in their own time and it can seem like forever  ::)
I'm not an expert but I'd suggest that you give it a little more time.
Good Luck and make plans on how you are going to cook your first egg  :D

waiting for that first egg always seems to take forever.  We bought POL and they didn't lay for many weeks after we got them.  Remember hens will only lay a certain number of eggs n their life times, so keep telling yourself that what you dont get now you will get later!

Some of my pullets have just gone 33 weeks old and still not a single egg from any of them!  ::)  These are heavy breeds so not directly comparable to yours, but it does illustrate the point that you really have to just wait and see.

I think I will eggsplode with eggcitement when they finally lay.

At the end of the day they will lay when they are ready :)
Experience is what you get when you didn't get what you wanted!!

I, too, am waiting eggcitedly for my first egg form my 3 Girls (Light Sussex), but as they've only just reached 18 weeks I think I could be in for a longish wait!  never mind - I'm sure it'll be worth the weight for ALL our eggs.  By the by, I read in one of my many chicken manuals that pullets can take up until their first Autumn to lay (if they are spring born chicks).  Good luck to you anyway!  :)

When we picked up our girls we were told two to three weeks before they would come into lay - one layed her first egg an hour after we put them in the coop!  :D

Well I cam home on Tuesday to find my first egg, very small but still an egg!,  this was followed by 2 on Wednesday, and another one on Thursday and friday.   I am sure its from the same chicken as they seem to be getting a bit bigger each time!.  WELL WORTH THE WAIT!

When I got my first hens over four years' ago my brother (who has kept hens for years) said to me to not bother them too much once they are fed and watered each day in the morning. Once they are in a regular pattern with feeding and feel relaxed I think this helps to settle them into laying. Good luck
