Help a beginner with a poorly chuck
« on: June 19, 2011, 07:54 »
Help?  I only got my chickens on Friday but already one has what looks like an eye infection.  Yesterday the eye was foamy and when I put them to bed, it was completely closed.  This morning it looks worse - swollen and red, still closed.  She can't move without the others pecking her.

Should I bathe it, or treat it in some way?

Any advice is much appreciated!!

you need to get her to a vets as it sounds like a symptom of mycoplasma  :(
Staffies are softer than you think.

I'd certainly want to know if I sold someone a sick chicken, as I'd want to know what I was doing wrong!

I'd take it back, why should you have the vets bill after only 2 days?

Spoke to the breeder who thinks that her eye has gotten septic after being pecked by another bird.  He's going to post out some antibiotics for me to give her.

Hope it does the trick as she looks worse than ever today - really red and swollen all round her eye. :(

I would try in the meantime some warm saline water and cotton wool to bathe the eye, just never redip the cotton wool into the water, it might ease the eye.
