Gijnlim asparagus
« on: June 16, 2011, 21:12 »
Anyone got a established bed of this?

Last year i planted 1yr old crowns, all grew with 3ft/4ft ferns. This year no harvesting and 6ft plus ferns. My question is when i start harvesting next year how tall will the remaining ferns grow.
Supplier sugested max height of 1m and checked rhs tonight and they say :9m.

Want to know because i planted them right next to the path at the centre of my plot at the enterance. If its going to be 6ft plus i'll move the path over in the winter rather than have to replant and wait again, lol, :)

According to this site it's 0.9m (think something serious has happened to the RHS decimal point if I'm reading your post correctly!)

Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

One of the best things about being an orang-utan is the fact that you don't lose your good looks as you get older

My Gijnlim were planted a year ahead of yours. Last year I cut spears for 3 weeks, as advised by the supplier, and the fronds reached 2 metres.

This year, the first full harvest, I started cutting in the last week of March and ceased at the end of May - 170 spears from 20 crowns. The fronds are about 1 metre high high and look like reaching the same height again. All the asparagus on my allotment site grows to a similar height.

It is worth putting up posts and wire to tie them in and prevent them blowing over as that can damage the crowns. Mine are next to a path and last year I just trimmed them back a bit.

Thanks for all that info Salmo. No-one has an established bed on our site. I did plant pacific purple at the same time but only half have grown this year with spindly 2/3ft stems.

Posts and wire going up today. Since they have a second flush of growth starting think i'll harvest a few as a reward :D
