Tomato sideshoot question
« on: June 15, 2011, 08:22 »
I think I must have overlooked a sideshoot on my cordon tomato, and it's branched off and developed a flowering truss - do I take the whole lot off, or do I leave the flowers to develop...? (All my other tomatoes are bush types - I'm too scared of this side-shooting business!)

Hi,
This happened to me last year but having about 80 plants (110 this year) it was somewhat difficult to keep up with it all especially as they were all cordons! Now I left alot of them and took alot of leaves off during the ripening bit and to be honest they were really successful. Depending on type, weather & the feed you give them etc you can't really tell at this point. Personally I would leave it, but I am sure someone will come along and say get rid because the plant won't have enough energy to do both. Up to you really at the end of the day!

Agree with SharonX, but if it's only one, you might as well take it off at the bottom, and let the cordon grow as normal.

We always get a few escapees like this, and although we've got about 45 on the go, if there are any which look like becoming a bit bushy, we give them a haircut!

Try and do it with a sharp knife or secateurs as well, it helps the wound to heal better.

I take them out, whenever I find them..............unless they grow right from the bottom.
Then I treat them just like one extras tomato plant with it's own cane etc.
In effect a double cordon.
