potato angst
« on: June 05, 2011, 15:00 »
I bought some vivaldi ,mayan gold  and charlotte from T&M and planted them under 4"" compost, as instructed, 2 weeks ago tomorrow. I still havent got any visible signs of growth, should I be worrying?

I was told that the potatoes didn't need chitting but the tubers did not seem to have very well developed eyes.

I know you were a bit late getting your potatoes organised this year, but most potato growers who take part in this forum will recommend chitting.

don't despair, they're probably fine. I planted mine out without chitting because i was very late buying them (for here in spain), and they took forever to come up (I can't remember exactly how long, but weeks) and now they're enormous.

How well watered should I keep the containers while I am waiting for them to come up? Is there any danger in over watering during this stage?

It's not necessary to chit potatoes at this time of year.  It will not make them grow and produce any sooner now.

We chit our potatoes early in the year Feb/March time to break their domancy and get them off to a quick start when planted out.  They are a sub-tropical plant and our growing season is not entirely suitable for them - not a long enough warm period.  So we start them off  long before the soil is warm enough to plant them out.

Don't overwater them or they may rot before they have started to grow. Give the pot a little lift to see how heavy it is - heavy is moist, light weigh is dry ;)
