Winter spuds in same spot as summer ones?
« on: June 13, 2011, 23:37 »
Ive got the spud bug!  I harvested 5 lovely new spuds today and i want more.  Ive grown them in pots with great success in the past but this is the first year they have been in the lottie.

Would it be really awful to bung them in where my summer spuds are?  If i added more compost and muck etc would it dilute/reduce the risk of disease?  I have limited space and dont want to mess next years crop rotation up.

Thanks

I suppose both summer and winter spuds would be within a year, so technically not breaking the yearly rotation, if you know what I mean... :-)

Rotation wise, you're OK, but be aware that Christmas new spuds, (which is what most folk aim for) are not the easiest things to grow.

There are all sorts of inherent problems in growing spuds so late outside, none the least of which are the higher risks of blight and protection from the weather.

One whiff of the first frost in October - bye bye spuds! We've discussed this many times on the forum and there is limited success in this department, certainly don't expect a big return.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

If you have got some 1st early seed potatoes left and you put them in now they should be ready at the end of Aug.

If you want them for Christmas put them in grow bags at the end of Aug and move them into greenhouse end of Sep/being of Oct.

I believe you can get seed potatoes for this  but I just keep some back from this springs planting.

I don't think you would have any luck using this years crop because they should not start sprouting till next year.

Thanks guys.

To be honest im not bothered about having them for Christmas so would probably just pull them up as tiny tots for an extra crop.  Having read previous posts (which i did do DD just couldnt find one about growing in the same site :) ) blight will probably be the worst thing if the seed pots arrive on time as they are due mid July so by my calculations if i put them straight in im hoping they should be ready by Oct/Nov before first really bad frosts as my plot is quite sheltered.
Ofcourse planning in this game can go right out the window but hey ho.
