Cukes on their way out.
« on: June 13, 2011, 18:37 »
I think that very cold night was just enough to see them off. They're looking decidedly unwell today.

Is there any point in sowing a few more now or have I missed the boat ?

I lost 4 out of 5 cukes and planted new seeds a couple of days ago. Mine are indoor ones so will get protection from the weather.  The are up and running and I re-potted them today. Provided we get some good weather they should do OK.

You have nothing to lose to have a go.

It's just behind that other one - over there.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

My cukes are half-dead, half-full of the joys of life!

My "Old reliable" Defender courgettes look as if they are suffering from every ailment under the sun, and I ain't got no more seeds left!   :(

Winter squashes have yet to make up their minds, but are definitely having cucumber-like thoughts!

Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

It is. :( None of ours have decided to die, yet...... . They're not exactly doing any growing either!  ::)

Lardman, sow the seeds outside, water well, and immediately cover with some sort of cloche, perhaps a bottomless 4L water jug with the top left on loose for air.

The cukes should appreciate the warmth and grow quickly into what will hopefully be a warmer summer for everyone. Mine are long out of their bottomless jugs but we still have cool weather here, about 14C today, brrr, but I gave them all a nice deep straw mulch and they seem happy in that.

Well spotted DD - they were over there, behind the breadmaker with the packet of little gem I'd also lost.  Its no fun living in a building site anymore.

I put 18 courgettes in earlier this year - 6 different varieties with the intention of planting out 1 of each and passing the rest on. By the looks of I might get 1 "black forest" plant.  :( Im putting it down to the cold nights and hot days, there have been huge fluctuations this year.

I've stuffed them in the propagator to start them off Trillium but I'll move them on as per instructions when they germinate (night temperatures here are still forecast for below 5)  Really wish I hadn't binned that plastic greenhouse would have been ideal inside the normal greenhouse.
