8 chickens - 5 older ones laying almost every day, until we got 3 new ones, who are just starting to lay. Now the old ones have gone on strike! As if to say, well if you get new ones you don't need us any more!!!

Yours is doing the same, waiting until you buy eggs, just a tease!

4 bantams - one is raising a pheasant chick and another is sitting on some wild turkey eggs  ??? but we are getting one a day from each of the other two at the moment. All our bantams started laying between 24 and 26 weeks,

For anyone not getting the expected number of eggs for this time of year, do you have any rooks nearby? We were finding only 1-2 eggs if we were lucky, though we have 7 hens. We were getting an average of 5-6 eggs daily back in April, so were baffled. I thought they were laying elsewhere (they had done that before) but searches turned up nothing. Then last weekend, we saw 3 eggs in the nest boxes mid morning but by evening, they were gone. I didn't think it could be a marten, mink or fox, as we had lost no hens. So we set up a web-cam in the shed window and watched the recording later. We saw a big rook come down, enter the main door of the coop, and emerge with an egg in it's beak! It flew up onto the small hutch outside the coop, so we had a clear view of it. The recording showed another rook (or the same one perhaps) come down and again, entered the coop through the main door.
We have made a simple scarecrow to put outside the coop, and hung up string with old cd's dangling. We also shut the main door, leaving only the pop hole open during the day. That seems to have solved it, as we had 3-5 eggs a day since then. It had never crossed my mind the rooks would do that, so thought I'd mention it to let others know it does happen.

We get 6 eggs most days from our 2 Bovan Goldlines and 4 Black Rocks.

I have seen magpies trying to outsmart our hens to get into the coop with run attached which is in an 36 square meter enclosure.  So far the hens have been very vigilant and won't let them anywhere near.  They do tolerate a male blackbird which goes in the run to clean up the pellets off the floor.

Did see a rook at the top of the silverbirch tree which is in their enclosure today so thanks for the warning Orlaith.  :D
