Cucumbers up a wigwam
« on: June 11, 2011, 16:22 »
Am i being silly thinking that i can grow a couple of cucumbers up a wigwam i made for some beans (sown but nothing has come of them, no problem as have plenty come up other wigwams) If i thread some string around them would the cukes be ok/like it/grow up them? just wondering as i  am slowly running out of room and verticle cucumbers would take up less space them letting them ramble.

thanks in advance.   :D

That depends on whether its an outdoor variety, or not. ;) Where you are , anyway. If you were further north, I might just have answered no, as I can't grow them outdoors here. :)

I cannot see a problem with that for outdoor types. Infact it's a brilliant idea! Wish I'd thought of that.

Yup they are put door variety, and i'm in nottingham (woohoo) and grew some last year - they were pretty successful, (getting 5 or 6 a week off each plant - i had two!!!).

I'll give them a go up this wigwam and see what happens. nothing to loose - i'll let my salad ones do their rambling stuff, and try my gherkins up the wigwam.

Thanks for the advice.

I always grow cucumbers in large pots with a wigwam made inside it with garden canes and twine.  I stop them when they reach the top.  I normally get 10-12 off each plant (but usually miss one or two that are hidden by the foliage in the centre of the wigwam- last year I found one that was monstrous size!
3 dogs, 8 chickens, 4 rabbits 2 guinea pigs, 10 quail, 2 fish and a demanding daughter who has gone to uni and left me with 29 animals to care for!!=)
