So one person simply posting that they have 6 tomato plants will mean nothing in the absence of a lot more information.

I find it useful to keep a notebook.

Do my eyes decieve me  a notebook    not an excel spreadsheet  :tongue2:
Good reply tho Kristen.
Although I have been doing this for many years, I still can't work out how many parsnips to grow, or worse still how many courgette plants  ???
The rest of the stuff is pretty easy, I know so many rows of spuds will give me enough to last through to March/ April, same peas, beans. Brassicas are grown in batches of 6

Nah, I was speaking in the vernacular (or with forked-tongue - take your pick!)

My only gardening records are electronic, it suits me better to be ale to "slice and dice" the data ... but many here talk of "notebooks" and "back-of-shed-doors" :D so I have used the well-known generic phrase and collective noun for all things long-hand and electronic (except, perhaps, if you are not using Windows?!!) "Notepad" :D

Just wanted to say I was amazed and inspired by the huge lists that people were coming up with, so I thought I'd write down everything we grow and see how it compared. Now I am truly amazed and proud! No way did I think that we could turn a bare patch of earth into a functioning food factory in less than 6 months, it just goes to show what you can acheive with hard work, a little bit of planning and a whole load of luck:

Reading all of this just one thing really strikes me looking at what we've planted (comparative to others on the site), I believe (can't say "think" as I'm blonde  :tongue2:) The Gaffer may have overdone the chillies a tad.  Is 50 chilli plants too much do you think?

I think this thread proves that even though everyone is different, there IS a lot to be learnt/gained from this exercise.

1. Newbies begin to understand the concept of 100 onions and 6 brussels sprouts and not the other way around. ???

2. The newly experienced realize they are growing a phenomenal range/quantity of food fairly easily when they take the time to list it. :)

3. The very experienced get to brag about their ability to feed half the country!  ;)

Its win win win!!
Liv.

Oh, me too !!

There are two of us, I have a full plot, but only have half of it in action at the moment, as this is my second summer, and I couldn't do it all straight away.  I am currently growing:

10 asparagus crowns (wont produce for three more summers yet)
20' Maris Piper
20' Lady Chrstl
2 squashes
4 courgettes
10 mange tout
3 green brussels sprouts
3 purple brussels sprouts
10 red cabbage
2 large pot of carrots (long and globe)
25' garlic
50' onions (summer)
12 runner beans
25' beetroot (red and golden)
25 mini sweetcorn
4 outdoor tomato
1 greenhouse melon
6 different rows of lettuces
salad bowl continers
10' spinach
50 leeks (in a cat litter box waiting to go out when there's space)

This is a HUGE amount more than I had going this time last year, and I hope for EVEN MORE next year after I get another quarter of the plot going this autumn ....
