Sick hen
« on: June 06, 2011, 11:17 »
Hi,

Went out to my girls earlier and one of them is not moving around and seems to want to sleep all the time. I have brought her in so she can rest away from the others. She is not eating and drinking  :(

Any ideas?

not on just those details but I would say get her to a vets for a check over - it could just be that she is trying to lay a soft shelled egg but it could be more serious  :(
Staffies are softer than you think.

You need to check a few things...what colour is her comb? Has it paled? Have you checked the perches for red mite? It is now the season for those swines and they will deplete your chickens dreadfully. Look through the feathers around her neck. Can you see any mites? If so, the poor girl is being blood-sucked. And then you need to strip the house from top to bottom to eliminate them - and if it is a bad infestation, expect to do that every weekend for a good 6-8 weeks.
Otherwise, try and get hold of a farm vet, have a chat with him and chances are, he will prescribe Baytrill. It's a good, broad-spectrum antibiotic and I always have some on hand. The only trouble is, you need to give it for a few days and you cannot eat the eggs for about 3-7 days after finishing the course (so I was informed by our vet). Baytrill contains something which is not pleasant for humans.
I do hope your chicken gets better...one of mine died this evening, totally out of the blue...all so healthy, happy and laying brilliantly...and she was only about 30 weeks old!
It just seems to happen, unfortunately!

Thanks for your help and advice.

She is an ex batt and just checked her for mites, and she had none. My other girl are fine. She has always been the smaller, weaker girl of the group and I am sure she will perk up now she is inside getting extra attention

Thats really sad news, I'm so sorry to hear about poor Dottie. X
