Egg without a Shell, a bit worried
« on: May 15, 2011, 17:10 »
Have just found one of my hens, a Speckledy,  with what looks like half of an egg without a shell hanging from her rear end.  Have removed what I can see but a bit worried there may be more to come - any advice please.

Hello Basildoq

Hens do sometimes lay softies and it makes them feel under the weather.  You must be careful if you are going to intervene to make sure that the egg does not break.  You do not want to leave any yolk inside because this can lead to egg yolk peritonitis, which does not have a good prognosis.

You will need to check her vent to make sure that nothing is left inside her and keep an eye on her over the next few days.

It may be worth giving her a warm bath as this will relax her and help her to expell anything inside.

If she seems to continue to be under the weather she may need antibiotics pretty quickly so it is a good idea to locate a local chicken-friendly vet.  Not all vets are and some refuse to treat chickens at all.

I am not an expert and I'm sure someone with more experience than me will be along to advise you.  In the meantime good luck and keep us posted.

I had this with my previous chickens, and occasionally they laid a gloopy egg or an egg without a shell, but they were absolutely fine :) dont worry!

Agree with Jesschocolate28, this happens from time to time with our hens, if you identify which one it was and make sure it's not a regular thing everything should be fine.
