eracaceous compost
« on: May 25, 2011, 17:24 »
Hi everyone. I've just recently found the pleasure of vegetable gardening and as a novice I could use a little help with the basics. I've built a few raised beds and need to buy some soil. I've been offered 5 large bags of compost from a friend, but it is eracaceous compost for lime hateing plants. Is it ok to use and should I add anything to it ? I Live in Essex and I think the soil is fairly neutral.

I'll pop this across to GYO, where more may see it. Please pop back to the Welcome forum & introduce yourself.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

It will probably be too acidic on its own for most veggies.  As Honeysuckle stated, it would be good for ericaceous plants such as blueberries or flowers such as camellia, rhododendrons, pieris - but I'm not sure about general veggie growing with it.

P.S. Welcome to the site
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Thanks for the advice. I was thinking if I added some lime it may be usefull, but even for free,
if my toms suffer I would be dissapointed.
