fiesty bird help!
« on: May 19, 2011, 21:07 »
i got my first 2 eggs yesterday and one today from my black rock, she is the first to start laying out of 3 chickens, but since yesterday she has become very fiesty which is totally out of character for her, they normally run from us as we havent had them long but all of a sudden she has this new found confidence and doesnt want me in the coop or run. i was in there trying to clean the coop out - its a big coop so i can walk in and she was pecking me, basically doing everything she can to get to me to peck. is this normall behaviour when they start laying? my other 2 are not like this but they are not laying yet.
and tonight when i went to shut there door as they had gone in to bed she run out as soon as she saw me and wanted to peck again. nne of them have ever been bothered by me closing the door to them and they have certainly never come out once in bed. so im confused to why her behaviour has changed since her first egg yesterday?

She is trying to assert dominance over you ;)  you can try putting your hang on her back between her wings and gently squishing her to the floor, as if she was being mounted by a cockerel.

wow i never new a chicken would try to dominate a human i thought they just had their own pecking order.. she does this with me and my son who 3 but she has never done it to my partner and he can pick her up and handle her fine, as soon as i walk it she comes at me standing tall and doesnt ant to let me past so i dont even know how i will even get behind her to do this, does it sound really bad if i say shes scarey lol? :/

One of mine is feisty and stands right in front of me, sort of squaring up to me, but she is the guardian and the one who does the nightly patrol round the coop before going to bed and who will charge out if she hears anything untoward.  You will get used to them and their little ways and they will peck at your shoes etc but it's just natural curiosity.  Spend time with them and they'll get used to you  :)
