Eggs going cold in the middle of incubation
« on: May 18, 2011, 22:16 »
Hi I have two broody chickens at the moment and so put some fertillised eggs under them. I moved one of them to a different cage but after her daily trip out to eat she went and sat back with the other broody hen leaving her own eggs. When i found them they were cold and I wasnt sure how long they had been unheated for. Ive put them back under her but could anyone tell me if they are still good or are they now useless? They have been under the chickens for about 12 days now.

Thanks for anyones time.

Michael.

Hi
You have nothing to loose by letting her continue to sit on the eggs, My first time broody accidently let one of her eggs go cold although I think it was earlier on than yours and I put it back under her, much to my surprise it was the only one to hatch.  :)

I agree with Pauline here,
you have nothing to lose by leaving the eggs under your broody hen and there may be some that are still viable.  A broody will often roll out eggs that she senses are not viable.  If she is still sat tight you could have some viable ones. Good luck and keep us posted.  Remember we love pictures on this site if your hen hatches any chicks out  :D

The worst accident I've ever had was with my first ever broody hen long before the internet and sites like this to help me along. She not only left them to cool but she also did the biggest broody poo all over them too!! It was lashing with rain and cold I didn't know about getting the broody off her eggs once a day back then. I washed them and put them back and they all hatched. So as said go for it you've nothing to loose.

I once chucked two eggs in the bin, the big black one that the dustbin man takes away. They were in there for 7 hours before I suddenly though, maybe they would be ok after all. So I scrabbled around the rubbish and found them, they were stone cold and both hatched a few days later in the incubator.
