Something wrong with my tomatoes?
« on: May 04, 2011, 15:49 »
I have 6 tomato plants; 3 Nice 'n' Neat cherry and 3 Moneymaker. The leaves on all of the Moneymaker are a yellowy green and it looks like the cherry tomatoes are going the same way. A couple of the leaves on one of the plants is going a bit brown at the tips too. I've been keeping them pretty well watered and they've been in the conservatory with periods outside too.

To show the colour of the leaves/browning:

And I noticed this too:

Does anyone know what is wrong with them and what, if anything, I can do?

looks like magnesium deficiency to me, with all the watering we've been having to do it is easy to use up the little if any, that was in the compost.
make up a spray of Epsom salts (54g per 4.5 litres water) and use on the leaves at fortnightly intervals, should do the trick.
Don't spray in full sunshine though or you will scorch the leaves  (I suggest that you rig up some shading until the spray dries)

Yay! They're not dying on me then lol. I thought that I might have overcooked them in the conservatory and that they were dying a slow death .

I shall get some Epsom salts. Thank you!

I had a similar issue with my tomatoes about a month ago, that the leaves seemed quite yellow.

I found  that they all turned green again once i left them out in cool conservatory at night instead of bringing them in the house. The cooler temps at night seemed to do the trick.
I can only assume the hot and bright days we have had recently possibly bleached or dried them out a bit

When toms are young, they can get a bit bleached by sun, but are soon strong enough to overcome that problem. When I'm planting my toms, I add everything but the kitchen sink to the soil so they get the complete range of nutrients: compost, rotted manure, BFB, kelp, magnesium sulphate (epsom salts in bulk) and calcium sulphate. The reason I do this, as well as keep the plants regularly watered, is to avoid blossom end rot (blackened bottoms) and maximize flavor.

I have been watering with Tomatorite added to the water at every other watering. I, wrongly, assumed that it would have everything needed for healthy tomatoes. I think I'm going to have to add calcium at some point too. How do I go about adding calcium now that they're already potted?

You only start feeding Tomorite when the first truss of tomatoes has set.  Always follow the instructions on the container.  Yours might be a little too well fed.
Cheese makes everything better.

I've only used a really weak solution. About 5-10ml to 6.5 litres of water every other watering. I've read conflicting information on when to start feeding so my compromise was to feed, but use a weak dilution until they're bigger.
