« on: August 30, 2007, 22:10 »
I am getting brown/bottle green splodges on my purple sprouting broccoli leaves the quickly turn yellow, they are under net and it is the lowest leaves first, the calibrese is not so affected and the sprouts are showing no signs so far.I can`t find anything in the books.Does anyone know what this could be??

could be a couple of things annie, clubroot turns the lower leaves yellow but the other stuff dont have it  :?
root fly has the same effect
also lacking in some nutrients will do it,give em a dressing of fish blood and bone and see if that helps
feed the soil not the plants
organicish

They are netted so probably not root fly, will give them a feed and see what happens.

You mean fleeced Annie?   Not being picky but newbies might think that netting them would keep off root fly.

sounds entirely natural to me - i always get the lower leaves going yellow and dropping off particularly on brussels and brocolli - just remove the ones that are going really yellow to the compost heap.

if the leaves are starting to go sooty black this is probably happening cause there isn't enough airflow getting in around the plants - again I sometimes get this on my brocoli under the viromesh.  I just trim off a few of the lower leaves and some of the leaves between any plants that are touching which usually helps and the harvest doesn't suffer because of it.
Gardening organically on chalky, stony soil.

Sorry WG,they are covered with viromesh. The lower leaves of the sprout and calibrese(under the same mesh) are loosing a normal amount of leaves but the purple sprouting are going faster and with these  spots appearing first.Spacing may be an issue but we are eating the calibrese now so they will be out soon leaving room enough for the sprouts and broccolli to grow trifid like.
