Broody hen i think
« on: May 03, 2011, 20:02 »
Hello again ,

We have recently just got a cockerel and two bantam hens they are all Lemon Brahmas  . However one of our Hens called Honey comb seems to be going broody but the thing is she has not got an egg under her she has layed previously on a daily basis ,but has not produced an egg now in the past two days. She is still eating but spends half the day in her coop pecking you  when you try to see whether she has an egg under her.

Any suggestions regarding this topic will be gratefully appreciated . Thank you.  :D

She certainly sounds broody. They will sit on on empty nest if no-one else's eggs are available to pinch and they don't lay while they are broody. It will last for about 6-7 wks then a couple more weeks before they start laying again. There are lots of topics on here about breaking broodiness but nothing I tried worked so I just let mine get on with it now.

Broody hens get very 'fluffy' whenever you get near them.  We have 2 broody hens at the moment.  If you dont want chicks there are ways to break them of it, you can put them in a wire bottomed cage without straw for a couple of days but to be honest its easier to just  let them get on with it.  You can always put another hens eggs under her if you want chicks or if you have friends with different chickens to yours you can ask them for fertilised eggs, its a good way of mixing up the colours and expanding your range of chooks.
