Wild Pheasants First Chicks
« on: May 02, 2011, 10:12 »
some of you may remembeer, we had a problem with a female pheasant (obviously) putting her nest right by the side of our house.
Anyway, we left her where she is, watching all the weeds grow up around her, and this morning caught sight of her first baby chick.  So exiting.  now we wait to see how many she has.  Before she sat on them, we counted 11 eggs.
We currently leave out mixed corn and chicken feed for the  all the wild pheasant to eat, as always pecking around chickens,( who are contained, due to fox in area, so we just hope!  we chased the fox away last night!) but is there any thing else we can give them, which does not cost a fortune!

Hello Karenjayne,
This is an interesting one!  I'm not sure that many people have any experience with wild pheasants.  My instinct would be to let them be wild and to intervene as little as possible.  I don't think the odd handful of mixed corn or chick crumbs would be too bad but may attract rats and other predators that would kill the chicks.  Mother pheasant will be keyed up to defend her young and will know about what food they need and where to find it.  Good Luck and keep us posted   :)  If you have a chance to post some pics that would be great  :D

Have tried to take photos, but they come out too dark.  maybe when they starting walking around.  least mum pheasant trust us to go near, well she has too as have to past her several times a day to get to chickens!  Have given some mixed corn and water for moment, and hope we don't get the rats.  our main problem maybe the fox who has reappeared.   seen twice at sunset in last two days.

Also we have another male pheasant, who stands and shouts for food to be put in a bowl, for him and his three wifes!
