things were looking so good too :(
« on: May 05, 2011, 19:38 »
last week i asked about soft shelled eggs which one of my girls were laying for over a week. i brought them extra oyster shell as thought it could be a calcium problem but for 2 days running now we have had normal eggs from her. i have came home today and she was looking really sad and slow. let her out in the garden and she was fine, i then noticed her go into the coop and stay in there for a long while so........ i went to investigate and found her sat in the nest box all puffed up she then stood up and laid another soft shelled egg right in front of me  the second egg from her today!!!!

has anyone else ever had this???

im really starting to worry about her now  :(

Hello Kellym,

sorry to hear about your hen.  I am not that experienced but understand from what I have read on this forum that hens do lay sofities and even two eggs in one day every now and then.  My feeling is that her laying will settle down.

I had one of my bantams looking very miserable so brought her into the house and kept her in the cat carrier in a warm room to relax.  She laid a soft egg and so I put her with the others and next day she was fine.

I have read about hens laying two eggs in one day with the second being a softie.  I think her egg-producing mechanism just needs to get into gear again.

Good luck and keep us posted
11 bantams (and counting!) 2 dogs 1 cat

she done it last week too and since then they have had the extra shell so hopefully as you say she will sort herself out, i just hate seeing her miserable when she acts so normal the majority of the time  :(

One of my girls is doing the same thing..laying properly for a couple of days and then laying softies, but I'd put it down to her getting on a bit, and she's an ex-batt, so I presumed she was just a bit worn out. I was informed that it's probably that she's coming to the end of her laying days and her egg factory is not behaving like it used to. How old is your girl?
Many pets, a bloke and 2 kids....help!!!

they do get miserable when laying soft shells  :(, try giving her a pinch of limestone flour (available from some pet shops) you can dip half a grape in it or a few sweetcorn kernals - keep this up once a day for a week to see if there is any improvment. Also make sure she has access to dark leafy greens as well to help with the absorbtion of the calcium  :)
Staffies are softer than you think.
