2nd plot - apple suggestions
« on: July 29, 2011, 15:24 »
Afternoon  :D

We have been offered a second plot, and are seriously considering taking it on, despite it being quite overgrown and full of rubbish.

The main objective is to have a handful of apple trees, aiming at providing apples as close to year round as possible...though I realise I am going to have to buy them for at least 4 months of the year. (will also use it for space hungry things like potatoes which prob would be better here than in my raised bed plot)

The number of apple varieties is quite daunting, so I was wondering if anyone would be kind enough to kick things off with some suggestions for as long a harvesting / storing period as possible. The ones we like to eat are braeburns / cox's.

I tried some Discoveries from the local market this week, and they are quite nice...so guessing that is a good choice for an early variety.

Any other suggestions would be welcome, particularly with regard to late varieties that store well into the new year.

Are you allowed trees on your plot? A lot of sites don't allow them  :(.
Also you wouldn't need to buy apples in the 4 months as they do store very well  :)
Staffies are softer than you think.

Yeah, trees not a problem, a few other have apple trees, and also there is a moderate sized tree on the bottom of the plot already (sadly not an apple tree though)

Are there eating apples which will store right through until the next crop?

I'm planning on a tree or two for the front garden. One i've been looking at is a Tydemans Early Worcester ona semi dwarfing stock. Cox is a bit special too!

I have a variety in my garden called Katy - it is showing bright red apples now. I would recommend it. For later on i grow russets.

Try to buy them in the same blossoming groups.

If height is a problem you can grow them as step-overs no problem.

I got whips from these people. http://www.ornamental-trees.co.uk/

very helpful over the phone. hope i helped
