All of a flutter
« on: April 21, 2011, 11:46 »
Hi all,  This is the beginning of our 3rd year of hen keeping and we have never had the experience we are having now.
Three of them have been having very, very noisy sessions and keep looking for places to hide to lay. Two have started laying in the cat house and the third just makes very strange noises and has got her self stuck a few times in between building materials and sheds, she has also made a crowing type noise.
Could it be that they are going broody (no cock here now) or are they suffering from the heat?  Any help would be gratefully received.

Thanks all
3 dogs now, 2 passed RIP Poppy and Paige, one wonderful husband and a new adventure on this wonderful island

Hi this sounds like what has happened to one of ours, squark squark, is all she would do, she then took to escaping to the neighbours, and up the drive she is now quite a celebrity in our lane!  She also started to lay in a bush rather than the nest boxes, she would also run with a wild look in her eyes, this all lasted for about 2 weeks and she has now settled down again, as my neighbour said 'spring has sprung', I would think its the same for yours and they may settle down soon :)

Similar behaviour here: lots of yelling, lots of running around - and the coops spurned to lay on top of a bale of hay in the woodshed. The "spring has sprung" theory is better than anything offered so far.
