Nellys having issues...shell less eggs galore :(
« on: April 20, 2011, 21:58 »
I've been posting about Nelly the ex-batt for a couple of weeks now.
She laid a shell less egg 2 weeks ago and was out of sorts. Then she perked up and didn't lay for a couple of days. For the past week, every other day, there's yolk on the coop floor under where she perches and the membrane of the egg. Im presuming the shell less eggs are just sliding out while she's perching.
During the day she's fine, eating, attacking the dog as usual, no change in her behaviour apart from going into the coop as if to lay, spending ages in there and then having a couple of minutes of shouting her head off....with no egg laid.
She looked grumpy earlier so I checked her over and there was a white wiggly string thing hanging out of her vent, so I pulled it out and it had a small sack of egg white attatched to the end. Once it was out, she cheered up again.
Is this how the end of egg production usually happens? The other 2 are still laying daily, normal eggs, normal shells. Is this just old age? Can anyone with older hens give me any pointers of what to expect or let me know if this is just how it happens. Thanks x
Many pets, a bloke and 2 kids....help!!!

it sounds like old age to me, you could try increasing her calcium intake by giving her a pinch of limestone flour on a treat (half a grape, sweetcorn kernal etc) for about 5 days to see if she improves.
In the meantime keep a close eye on her as laying softees really takes it out of them (their innards have no hard shell to push along) and they can be off colour. Also if one breaks inside and some gets left inside can lead to infections which need quickly treating with antibiotics.
Make sure she has plenty of dark leafy greens to help absorb the calcium  :)
Staffies are softer than you think.

Nutrobal calcium supplement may help her as it's easy for the hen to absorb and use.
