Borlotti Support
« on: April 20, 2011, 12:06 »
Have some borlotti beans seeds and wondering whta's the best method of support for the plant? Was thinking of netting between two canes, or would a cane wigwam be better? Also what sort of height do they reach? Thanks for any advice/help on this

Beware !  there are some dwarf Borlotis, which don't need canes.   However, same set-up af for runner beans should work.  ::)  I think the netting would start to sag as weight of the crop increased. Cheers,   Tony.
I may be growing OLD, but I refuse to grow UP !

If they are indeed climbing borlottis I'd make a wigwam. About 7 or 8 canes per wigwam. You can then thread string in between about every  foot or so to help support the weight of the beans

Hi :) There's no mention on the packet of them being a dwarf variety. called 'Borlotto Supremo Nano'

As to canes, thanks for the helpful advice, what sort of height would work best?

That's a dwarf variety. The word 'nano' is Italian for dwarf.

Hi :) thanks for the advice and help on that, so apart from a single cane not much support needed.

You won't need any support for the dwarf borlotti

Yes, you can get climbing borlottis and they make a very lovely sight clambering over their supports  :)
