Small eggs from one bird
« on: April 10, 2011, 18:42 »
Hi,
I've had my birds (2 Maran/Araucana crosses and a Sebright) since last October and they've been laying for over a month now. The Sebright produces an egg more or less the size of one of the Marans, both of their eggs being blue. The other Maran lays a white egg less than half the size of the others - more like a large pointed marble really! All free range.

Anyone have any ideas please?

(Why didn't I do this years ago?)

Not meaning to be funny or anything, but I think it's the Sebright laying the smaller egg since they don't lay blue eggs. The blue egg gene is dominant which would suggest to me that both of your Maran/Aracauna cross are laying the blue eggs. Also because Sebrights are bantams they will lay compartively smaller eggs.

Thanks D. Stands to reason really when you think about it. Obviously I didn't think hard enough. Must be retirement, Alzheimers or just being dimwitted most likely.
