Overwintering lettuce.
« on: April 03, 2011, 18:31 »
While I'm sure it's not a record, Mrs Growster is currently trying to keep up with the lettuce which she planted late last summer, and kept under cloches through all the winter and all that snow, and we've been eating it all through the winter.

They seem to be bounding ahead again, which means that that side of the plot is having to stay as it is without a bit of TLC!

Is it normal for lettuce to stay the winter like this? I'm sure it's never happened before!

If I leave my lettuce in the ground too long, it always seems to bolt.

I've got some overwintered lettuce on the plot. It's an Italian variety and it's as tough as nails. Has to be to withstand all the snow that was piled up on it.  It's called Meraviglia  :)  Mine was left uncovered  :)  I've not tasted it yet to see if it's tough but it looks fine  :)

I overwintered several hardy types outside and they've gone berserk in the past weeks. They are starting to heart up now but I've been picking leaves for ages. A little tougher than usual but still lovely and fresh....
Some are starting to go stalky so it probably means they're starting to bolt.

yesterday I picked the last of the Parella Rossa winter lettuce from the polycarb greenhouse, it's great to still have salad as the season warms up :) (shame we can't have home grown toms as well :( )

I must remember to sow more this autumn, as this year's early sowings are not quite ready yet :(  ( I must get better at this succesion sowing lark  :nowink: )

Me too. It's annoying when you can't keep on top of things. Keeping too many balls in the air at once is not a forte of mine  :D

These hardy leaves don't seem to attract rabbits either so well worth growing.

Interesting replies, and thanks all!

She planted them as pick-and-mix leaves, so there were always several small leaves staying on the stem to grow on. They're now trying to push up the cloches, and don't seem to be bolting yet. They do make a welcome change from shop ones.

(I suppose I'll have to do something when the cloches reach about six feet off the ground...) ;0)

Took my cloche off last week and still have a lot of lovely leaves but noticed that the Mizuna is starting to flower.  Must remember to plant a lot more next autumn as this lot has done really well.
