Rhubarb & Lime!!
« on: March 28, 2011, 19:30 »
I have four rhubarb crowns on my plot, three Timperley and one apple which I dont know the name of. Anyway, one of the Timperley crowns has reached a certain stage in its growth and has just simply stopped! The other crowns are growing happily away, but this little blighter is having none of it. My thought for this lack of growth leads me down the lime usage path,as last year I grew brassicas fairly close to the rhubarb and used lime as a clubroot preventative. So, is rhubarb likely to sulk if in contact with lime? All crowns are fairly young and planted in exactly the same way/depth. Thanks for your time

From what I know(and I may be wrong)rhubarb would sulk if you put lime near it as it prefers slightly acidic soil.I would make sure your rhubarb has plenty of well rotted horse manure and enough water to start with.

It's possible the lime got too close and/or you were a bit free with it. Rhubarb definitely prefers its soil to the more acid side.

As suggested, add more rotted manure this year, water in well, and the rhubarb should recover in a year or two. If you use lime in the area again, set up a temporary fence board between the rhubarb and the crop so no lime gets close to the rhubarb. Remember that rhubarb roots will spread out further than the extent of the leaves so don't crowd them when liming a nearby area.
