I, like I think most people, tend to use balanced fertilizers on my plot, be it BFB, Grow More,Q4 etc. and apply it to all crops.

I have just come across an article by Jeff Gillman (Garden Professors) Washing State University USA, in which he argues that every year you add a balanced fertilizer in the appropriate amount for your plants needs for nitrogen you're adding too much phosphorus and potassium. Apparently phosphorus and potassium don't move readily in the soil while nitrgen does. This leads to a build up of P&K in the soil. His recommendation for a balanced fertilizer would be 5-1-2 or 5-1-3.

Would normal crop rotation take up all the additional P&K being adding to the soil?

Thoughts please.

the other option is to buy a soil test kit and just add what your soil is deficient in, as farmers are encouraged to do :)

ok, i could bore you to death here, BUT i wont what i would say is  if you have a balanced rotation you will be depleting the reserves that you apply so i would not worry too much.

Think about restotative cropping and exploitative cropping - ie what crops are returned to the soil, what crops remove all of their reserves.   Compositing will return nutrients.

DIY Soil testing is ok, but to be honest unless you have the correct facilities you will not get a true result.

its nice to be important, but it more important to be nice......
