How long for Comfrey tea to brew
« on: April 01, 2011, 19:46 »
I stuffed a load of comfrey leaves into a large plastic bottle today (an old photocopier toner bottle) and I'm wondering how long it will take for some useful liquor to be produced.

Also, do I gradually add more leaves as it rots - my first time with this.

Oh and I didn't add any water. Is that OK?

It would be great if you could somehow install a small spigot tap at the bottom of the bottle. The leaves will soon rot on their own (don't add water) and will juice at the bottom, perhaps in 2-3 weeks. And yes, keep adding more leaves and poke them with a sharp stick to initiate rotting.

The resulting tea is very strong and needs to be watered down in the watering can quite a bit.

Some folk add water to an open bucket type of brew (which reeks like a sewer) but yours can be just straight leaves and yes, they will rot down quickly.

Thanks for the tips Trillium - 2 - 3 weeks doesn't seem too long. (Are we there yet? )

Might try the pointy stick idea tomorrow, although I did squash them quite a bit when I pushed them in through the 2" hole at one end.

I might also think about a tap - I can get more of these bottles and I'm sure the method will change over time. But one problem I forsee is the tap getting blocked. Perhaps some sort of filter might be in order.

What sort of dilution would you go for with a liquor so strong?

Thanks again.

Here's another idea that might work for you, again, no water added (but still reeks).

Thanks. Interesting to see the size of her bocking 14 - mine are in their second spring now and they're very much smaller (although her video was shot in June). If my five plants grow to that size I'll be making industrial quantities of tea and wil have masses for the new compost heap. Horahh

Must have a look at the rest of her videos.

P.S. Wouldn't it be good to have a specific thread (maybe a sticky) which people could use to post links to videos they've come across?

We used to have such a link but it got very top heavy with, let's just say, 'unusual' postings.

And there is always the search facility on here for people to find tips which others have posted.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Oh, I see  Thanks Trillium.

Search facility - fair enough Yorkie.
