Moving croci
« on: April 03, 2011, 18:41 »
Hi all,

I have a lot of croci that have finished flowering. They are all in pots and I want them to join their friends in the lawn.

When and how is the best way of doing this? Should I wait till the leaves die then transplant the bulbs or move them when they are still in leaf?

By the way, this is the first spring with my own garden and I have to say what a pleasure it is!

I'm not entirely sure.  If you were putting them in the border I'd have said move them now, as moving bulbs 'in the green' is generally more successful.

However, as they are going in to lawn, is there a risk that they will get mowed?  If you cut off the leaves before they have died down, then the goodness won't have gone back into the bulbs and the bulbs will be weakened.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

I would leave them till the autumn as this is the normal time for planting. Also as mentioned if you move them now you will mow the leaves off and that's not good.

I always understood that the goodness in the leaves has to die back and feed the bulb... so I would wait until the leaves have gone brown (and crispy) and they easily come away from the bulb when very gently pulled... then the bulbs can be transplanted or dried and planted at a later date.

By the way...  I believe when the flowers die, that is the time to feed.
