We have had the same problem as many of you,  thinking that our chucks were egg bound, and after loosing two of our three hens, we consulted someone in the know, A well respected allotment holder, who has kept fowl all his life. his wisdom (although upsetting) after describing the symptons, he asked how often do you give them bread?
alike all of us, (we, thinking were doing the right thing, overfeeding them) his simple solution was, (if we wanted to keep our last chuck was this) NO MORE BREAD(What happens when you have bread with a hot bowl of soup? it expands in youre stomach, just as it does for chucks when they drink water).

I have repeatedly mentioned this - bread is a no-no - a very small amount of dry toast is ok if you need to give them something like marmite for the B vits etc but as a routine treat then no.
I used to be a park warden and it did get me how many people used to turn up with whole loaves of bread to feed the ducks - I even used to do it with my children but know better now, but luckily for the ducks the majority of bread lands in the water so is well soaked before they get it so it is pre-swollen.
