I keep my chickens for the love of them, just like many do. Plus knowing how the eggs  (or meat) have been produced. I dread to think how much it really costs me to produce 6 eggs but i'm not a business & i'm not bothered. I get a bit back towards their keep from egg sales plus yummy eggs & a interesting hobby. I also met a really good friend too through keeping chooks. I'm happy.  :)

Oh darn.  There goes my retirement plan.   ::)

Seriously though, I prepared a business case for my Other Arf when first proposing we get chickens.  Given the number of eggs we eat each week, and the local price of free range eggs, we should break even pretty quickly.

My original calculation was that the chickens would have paid for themselves in 18 months, but having made the coop out of reclaimed materials and bought slightly older pullets than planned, we should break even sooner than that.

Of course this just covers direct expenses and takes no account at all of time.  For me the time is offset by the pleasure I get from such lovely pets.
