Preparing trench for runner beans.
« on: March 19, 2011, 10:18 »
I hope you don't mind me checking something with you all.

New allotment, just clearing area where peas and beans going to go. I remember my grandad used to dig trench and line it with kitchen peeling etc. Is it too late for me to be doing this now? Is it useful where my squash are going to go too? I have a good pile of manure and 'stuff' in my compost heap but it's not rotted down yet! If I put it in a good spades depth down as he did would this be okay? Can't remember if this was an autumn thing he did. Any advice appreciated. Thanks x

You can prepare your trench now ready for when its time to sow or plant out your peas & beans.

You mention "manure and compost heap", if its manure that isn't well rotted down I personally would not use it, even if it was dug well down, although others will say otherwise no doubt.
Unless otherwise stated it can be assumed ALL posts are by Pa Snip

Thank you, that's really helpful. I hadn't thought of leaving it open, I was going to back fill, I have a lot to learn. Kitchen waste it is! I'll leave the manure well alone until autumn.

Thanks  :) it's great having people to ask.
