my duck's ill - any ideas?
« on: March 16, 2011, 15:34 »
Can anyone help?
I've had a trio of khaki campbell's for about a year now. One of the girls is displaying some odd symptoms that I can't find in a book/online though:

She has developed a crooked neck (ie tucking her bill down onto her chest)
Her quack is deeper, louder and more frequent
She seems to be gagging every now and then
Her feathers around her neck are also sticking out at a slight angle
Sits down more frequently than she used to.

She is eating and drinking well (pellet and mixed corn) and still laying in fact both have been laying well - an egg each a day, almost without fail. I wormed them with flubenvet 3 months ago. They run in a 50ftx50ft paddock with a small pond, shelter and an auto feeder and drinker.

Any ideas?

thanks

Have you had a look at the poo? Can you see anything in it? Even if they were wormed 3 months ago this is a possibility and might be worth reworming, particularly as gape worm can kill and quickly. That being said, some of mine have always done that gagging sort of action and always been fine.

Is she reluctant to leave the house in the morning and keen to return through the day? Is she head bobbing to the others a lot? ALthough rare with Campbells they can go broody.

ALways hard to make sugestions when you can't see the bird but hopefully it is not serious if she is still laying.
Be like a duck. Calm on the surface but always paddling like the dickens underneath.

Thanks for the reply -  haven't noticed any poo issues - certainly no blood present & cleaning out each week & replacing aubiose bedding.
All 3 charge out of house as usual each morning and they don't go back in the house until they're told to each night .
I did find a clutch of eggs in the hedge but not sure who was responsible and didn't notice either sitting on them. I installed a wooden nestbox in the house at that point but eggs got laid all over the floor, as usual.
Should I try worming again as a precautionary measure anyway?
I forgot to mention we get a lot of pheasants and partridge intheir pen looking for food inthe morning...

I would as a precaution, especially if there are lots of wild birds about.
