Ooooh, tomshooter...where's your handbag??  No need to be so nasty, she was only trying to find a gentle way to cull...we'd all love to find a way in which we could do it and cause no distress to the chicken and as little as possible to us. People dont come on the forum to be told off, at least she asked first. Play nicely or I'm taking your toys off you.
Many pets, a bloke and 2 kids....help!!!

I'm sure Rachel can kill chickens in a proper way as she is keeping some meat birds.

I couldnt do it I think...I'd end up paying through the nose to have mine put down if my OH didnt have the guts to do it. Its a scary prospect getting it wrong, even if the chicken is suffering and you're doing it a favour...I'd seriously struggle to bring myself to do it. My chickens are pets though...suppose if I was a farmer or kept them for meat, I wouldnt get so attatched.  Saying that, when I had tropical fish, if one got ill, I put it in a bowl of water and put it in the freezer because it just shuts the fish down and it 'feels' nothing.  I'm just a big girly girl!!  Sorry I told you off. Friends?? :)

Uh-oh!

I wasn't going to comment on this thread, but I'm afraid I have to speak up here!  There is no evidence to suggest that a fish doesn't feel anything when killed this way.  Its movements slow due to the cold, so it doesn't thrash around and show us it is suffering, but that doesn't mean anything.  In fact tropical fish can be shown to suffer when their temperature is dropped just a few degrees below their living temperature, so I can't see how freezing can be humane.

The only acceptable way to kill a fish at home (in my opinion and that of many others) is to behead it quickly.

There are many theories around about 'easier' ways to do it, but they are about relieving the suffering for humans - nothing to do with reducing the suffering of the animal.

as i said i dont need to i can do it myself i dont like it so i am getting a dispatcher only cos i am never really sure when they die?

I am not squeamish and have been brought up round animals all my life. IT WAS AN IDEA given to me and as there are a few on here who are nervous then i thought it might be a way that would help them.

jeez and i thought i had had a bad week some of you are soooooooooooo stressy

It's just that people don't like to see animals suffer in any way.

It was kind of you to sugest an alternative method but it really is not a method to be recommended.
