Builders sand used for bricklaying is not good for growing as it tends to compact. Sharp or screed sand used for laying floors is the one to get.

So, I can't use ordinary builder's sand, then?  :tongue2:
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

There's been a debate on the sharp vs builder's sand issue which is worth looking up. The person who took the opposite view to me made the point that once builder's sand is mixed in with non-homogenous soil it behaves differently to how it behaves on its own. His argument was pursuasive and worthy of consideration, and I commend it to you. Maybe someone will post the link.

This one? :

Builder's sand and sharp sand are both £1.64 per 25kg bag at B&Q; why buy anything other than sharp sand for horticultural use since there don't seem to be any question marks about it?  :)

JayG - thanks for looking this up - I fully agree with you regarding the 'why buy anything else' comment, and I personally wouldn't put builders' sand on my patch either.
