Baskets for my strawberry plants
« on: March 04, 2011, 00:50 »
Hello
Tomorrow i'm going to buy these http://www.ikea.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/IKNYItemPopupView?catalogId=11001&storeId=7&langId=-20&uBg=cjIzQ0JHYjVjVUxNQ0pERmJ4TlVrRXdZWXQyV0dqSXk1U2JWMm8rTERGQnA4MGhVaDMwRjZiNk
What do you all think? I will be lining them and planting my strawbs in them, to hang on my allotment fence (that has yet to be built)

Hi Lizzie your link doesn't work I'm afraid.
I grew strawbs in hanging baskets in the greenhouse 2 yrs ago. I planted spare runners in the autumn in a mix of old tomato compost mixex with some fresh & fertiliser, left them outside until jan-feb then took them in for an early crop. They did really well. Hope yours do too.Just didn't get round to it last year but will certainly do it again.

yep Links a duffun.   Strawberries will grow in almost any container as long as the soil has enough nutrient, but then they respond to sulphate of potash or fish, blood & bone or even tomato food.

Success of crop will obviously depend on the variety of the plant and the quantity of planters you use.

That works lizzie! :) They would need to be well lined, what lining were you planning to put in them?

Went to Ikea last night, and they were all sold out :(
I suppose at £1.12 each they would've gone quite fast, hmmmmm. I might try and order some online.
I'm off to the allotment in a bit- husband has managed to get some large strong pallets through work. He works in a garage, and the pallets are for protecting body panels and engines. They are approx 7ft long x 5ft wide and about 2 inches thick :)
I'll be attempting to make a shed and all my raised beds from them.
The thinner pallets i get will be utilised for the fences and compost bins.
Thankfully the weather is brighter today and warmer, so hopefully i'll get quite a bit done today.
