Aviary
« on: March 03, 2011, 20:18 »
Soooo..
My new chicks are due in a week, and rather than buying them a new chicken coop to move into when they're big enough, we're going to evict the quail and hand over their current house to the new chicks..
We're also going to be hatching some more quail soon hopefully! So my question is.. Does anyone know of a good place that sells aviaries that we can get to move the quail into? =)
I like this one...

but it's a little bit pricy!
Thank you =D x

I don't know much about quail but it seems you would be paying a lot of money for going upwards - the height of the house looks very tall.  Is this just for sleeping in?  Would they not be better in a hutch for rabbits or guinea pigs as quail are very small.

Quail were traditionally kept in aviaries as they cleaned up the food dropped by other birds (they still need to be fed as well tho') as they lived on the floor of the aviary. They can be kept in a hen run etc the height of an aviary is not necessary. They do need 2 to 3 feet of height as they fly straight up and can hurt/kill themselves otherwise. If you Google quail you will get better height recommendations. :)
Experience is what you get when you didn't get what you wanted!!

We have them in a chicken coop atm, but are wanting to move them to an aviary for two reasons, firstly because they hide at the back of the run so we can never see them, so in an aviary we'd be able to see them from above, and secondly cleaning them out is really difficult without letting them escape, so I like the idea of two doors, and also being able to stand up in there to sort them.
(crawling into a chicken run and shutting the door behind me is not my favourite part of cleaning the animals out! =D)
Also my quail fly up quite high and hit their heads on the roof of what we have at the moment (we bought a tall chicken coop and integrated run as recommended on quail sites) so i'd quite like to give them more room, don't want their little brains getting damaged! =)
