Keeping hens off the coop roof
« on: March 03, 2011, 23:42 »
My hens seem to love nothing better than hopping onto the coop roof which is only about 3-4 high and then leaving their droppings all over it. Is there anyway i can discourage this, any tricks i can try??? would love to hear from someone that could advise me.

Many thanks

Brad

Make sure you never spill food on the roof! Our girls found their way up when I carelessly left a pot with their grain in on the roof while I did something else....

Also as they like to try different heights, give them other things in the run to hop onto: blocks of concrete or wood, etc.  We have stood some wooden bed ends up in the run and put some pallets around to give some variety.

However, you do get a better view from the roof.....

I made a little cover for the coop out of clear plastic - about a couple a squid per metre and a good 55" wide. It keeps it clean, and dry in the rain.

As for making the chooks behave - forget it. Life is far too short. Try to discipline them and you have just invented a really fun game. Just enjoy how good they look up there and post a piccie. It's  official policy, y'know ::)

Sorry i dont think you can stop them. I would cover the top of the coup in some thick plastic and let them get on with it.

I have had this problem. My coop is inside a run, that is 6-7 foot high.

What I did was build a small platform, and put the coop up on it, with a ramp up to the door. The roof of the coop was no very close to the run roof.

But they still managed to get up!!!

So was able to fit some polycarb sheets around the top of the coop roof as barriers and as they are clear they are not too intrusive.

Maybe this comes under the hading of "life is too short"!  Battle with birds if you wish, but I suspect you'll get bored before they do....
