Lilium "Mona Lisa"
« on: March 01, 2011, 12:21 »
My bulbs have arrived but there are no instructions!
I have stored them in a cool dark place because I remember reading somewhere they don't need planting til March? Am I also right that they will take some shade and need to be planted quite deeply?
I've got 12 bulbs and would like a swathe....can I plant in the middle of my swathe of euphorbia? How close can I plant the bulbs, please?
All advice gratefully received!!!

Here's some basic info on them:
http://www.gardenguides.com/2308-lilium-mona-lisa-seeds-bulbs.html

I grow a lot of lilies and find that they don't do nearly as well in shade as they do in full sun. They'll do okay in part shade, but less on the part and more on the full sun.

I don't know how tall your euphorbia will get but if it's the ground cover, then that's a good place for lilies.

And yes, they do need to be planted at least 6" deep to help hold them up when the heavy flower buds open. The best method is to plant each bulb almost 6" deep, fill, then mound some soil over each bulb area so that water (liliums nemisis) can run off and not pool and rot the bulbs. Feed the soil well so you'll get the large blooms and scent. I try to keep mine at least 4-6" apart so there's good air flow.

Planting - you don't have to wait until any specific date. As long as you can dig the soil, you can plant them. They'll sprout when the warmth is to their liking.

I believe its also an advantage to put some sharp sand around the bulb if the area tends to get damp.

Thanks! Should be ok as it's a border in full sun and the euphorbia grows quite thickly so will need to clear small spaces.
Should look rather pretty with the lime green heads setting off the lilies......just realised they flower July/August so the euphorbia will be faded....doh...never mind.....the verbena bonariensis, crocosmia and Japanese anemone might be in flower.......
Shame I can't plant them closer to the patio because the scent is supposed to be lovely but I'll just walk down the garden....LOTS....with my nostrils flapping!
