Re-usable windows?
« on: February 20, 2011, 16:46 »
Double glazing starts tomorrow and I am wondering whether anything useful can come of some of the windows...

The  bay windows will be too big but there's the one above the door:

There's an identical one in the bathroom although with textured glass, and one of the same height but a third pane at the back too, and a smaller one on the ground floor:

Finally there's a big window also on the ground floor:

I will be asking the DG fitters to detach the stained glass for me to keep, but can anyone offer creative suggestions for e.g. cold frame or little greenhouse type thing from the other windows?

Bear in mind that my DIY is very very limited to say the least.  If the windows can't obviously be reused, I'm happy for the DG fitters to take them away.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

I wouldn't like to advise on a construction project, but just to warn that the workmen get really grumpy if you ask for the windows to come out whole with the frames  it is much harder for them and so takes longer  :( Good luck with that.

The bits that open are easy to remove though.

Yorkie, I read somewhere about a nice cheap Coldframe which is very easy to make.
Use bales of straw/Hay as the sides and as a top you could use your old windows/ glass. When finished with you could dig the sides into the ground or compost ;)
Hope this is of help from a not so novice gardener ;) ;)  :D

ive just used one of those windows that open as a cold frame. Ideal size on my plot. They only screw into the main frame. I got the hinges left on to so just had to screw it straight onto the frame i made.
I'm very important. I have many leather-bound books and my apartment smells of rich mahogany.

Thanks all  :D

The double glazers were superb, got all the stained glass windows out for me and I kept 5 of the regular sized panes (should have got 6 but couldn't count!)

So roll on summer!

I can't do much DIY but I did manage to screw together four windows of the same size to make a box upon which I place a piece of toughened glass (which I found on my plot when I took it on)  Voile!  Cold frame.  It's served me well four years now and I'm right pleased with it  :)

Can you fix them like a pyramid, i.e just two panes, going from a point at the top, and going at 45 degrees down to the ground?

Looks like a big cloche, which I suppose it really is.

Suggest basic wired ties on the top, if you can drill though the frame (presumably they left you that), and just keep poking bits of wire through holes until it looks strong enough - when it probably will be! The bottom shouldn't move, but you can plonk a couple of pegs along each edge to make sure!
