Stargazer Lilies
« on: February 17, 2011, 19:55 »
Hiya,  bought some stargazer lilies in a pot last year, they flowered then died back, I've done nothing with them since really, should I leave them alone or repot/seperate the bulbs into new pots? will they have made more bulbs over winter? I'd love to have more, they are truly stunning flowers....

If the compost hasn't been too wet over winter they may well have survived.  I think that they reproduce by producing little 'scales' as offshoots which you then pot up and a few years later they get big enough.

I'd put the pot somewhere sheltered if it's not at the moment, wait a month or so, then replace the top layer of compost (if they were in multipurpose compost then I'd consider replacing all the compost with John Innes #2 or #3) and then they'll start growing in due course.

Some extra fertiliser would be good - probably general purpose?
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Hi

Yorkies advice is good, bought some cheapies in Morrisons, left to their own devices & they have filled a big pot in 3 years.

I'm going to split mine soon & give the small bulbs/offshoots more room to grow on till flowering size.

Onlygoth, carefully pull back soil in the pot to see if the bulbs look plump and healthy. If so, you can direct plant them outside soon as the weather allows and they'll create their own extra seedlings if you can't bother to scale them yourself. Do make a mound of soil right over the bulb area to deter surplus water, the lily's biggest enemy. The lilies will live for many years with no care.
