Spillers Layers Pellets?
« on: February 13, 2011, 23:41 »
Has anybody got any experience of these? They have some at our local Budgeons at £7.50p for a 20kg sack. The Spillers brand seems to have a good name around  the internet but I can't find any specific reviews on these pellets.

Once again, much jealous of the price of your layers!  My branded layers has just jumped up to over 19euros for 25kg

As to the brand I really can't comment as I have no experience, but generally layers are a much of a muchness. :)

I use a lot of Spillers products, they are excellent. They have some great products for the horses and I do get Spillers Layers mash, haven't tried their pellets but that sounds like an excellent price.

I've always used these layers and my birds are fine.  I've had many hens which have lived to over 6 years old the oldest being 10 a Light Sussex.  You won't find much on them on the internet because they aren't the main focus for spillers their horse feed is but like many feeds companies they will produce feeds for poultry to use up spare mill capacity particularly in the summer when many larger animals are grazing on grass.

Poultry feed is chicken feed litterally in terms of the 'value add' feed companies make whereas horse and more valuable animals are more lucretive.  Hence Spillers poultry feed is mainly aimed at commercial poultry farmers not hyped with fanciful marketing and is a basic quality feed.  This is in contrast to Alan & Page, for example, who produce lots of specialist formulations for specific niche applications and they get higher margins by charging higher prices (some times twice this price) and marketing the virtues of specialist feeds.  Don't forget chicken don't buy anything.

If you can get Spillers it is very economic and good basic quality.  How do I know so much about Spillers?  Well lets say a little birdie told me or I heard it from the horses mouth and I don't pay anything like that price.  Even at main stream feed merchants I saw it at £6.50 a 20k bag last year.

I use Spillers pellets for chickens and ducks. They are just what is available locally. My chickens and ducks seem to do very well on them. My ducks started to lay first and second week in December despite our arctic weather. I was worried about them trying to keep warm and produce an egg but they are very happy, well-covered and still  both producing a daily egg! My hens are also looking well and started laying regularly  at the start of the year - very suprising given weather; they are not hybrids but Light Sussex and a Cotswold Legbar. :)

I would conclude, therefore, that Spillers do a good job. I also use their products for horses.
Experience is what you get when you didn't get what you wanted!!
