The chemical ones using a test tube are said to be more reliable than the probe versions.

My probe only told me ph...it didn't tell me anything else.

If you want to know anything other than that (eg NPK levels) I think you have to have the test tubes.

The probe-type need to be calibrated before use - so you still need known-pH samples to calibrate against - which is almost as much faff as the test tube ones ... so on that basis the test tube ones might not be very different
