was wondering while watching the chooks . i have loads of hens that lay but never know who lays and who doesnt .   was wondering weather if a hen hasnt layed for say 2 months could it go broody or do they have to be laying to go broody ?

just a random thing i have never thought about untill now . lol

A lot depends on the breed chickchook.  Some are slaves to their hormones and are notorious for going broody all the time.  They can be so busy doing that you never get an egg out of them.

I have bantams and 1 of my older girls who doesn't lay anymore went broody this year so egg laying seems optional to deciding to nest in my little flock   Having said that I have bantam girls who have never been broody and 2 of my Wyandottes do and 2 don't, so go figure

I also don't think it's necessary for a hen to be in lay to go broody.
