beautiful white bean seeds......to eat or not to eat?
« on: February 09, 2011, 13:28 »
I`ve bean reading past topics and I`m still not sure about whether or not I can eat my bean seeds.I took my bean poles down today (I know, very late ,but the blue, great and longtailed tits like to rootle about in the dead foliage for bugs in the winter!) and was very surprised to collect some of the most beautiful white beans from I think they were called White Lady runner bean plants.A friend gave me half of his packet. Many were yellowed and dead from the harsh frosts
.
They look very like butterbeans .I am a waste not want not person, but need reassurance that as long as I cook them VERY well after soaking,I,and more importantly,my family, will be here tomorrow! If they taste of nothing, thats ok,I can always cook a super sauce for them!

Here is a photo.

As you planted 'em you should be able to say what beans they are!  But seriously folks, an overnight soak, then a boil for 45 minutes and they should be nice in a tomato sauce.   Cheers,    Tony.
I may be growing OLD, but I refuse to grow UP !

I think they were called White Lady runner bean plants.

People do grow runners just for drying and using the beans inside, same as Barlotti beans ;)
Give them an overnight soak and then bring to boil. Boil for 10mins then simmer till soft.
Lovely

Looking again at your snap,  I think they could be what I grow.  In Greece we had a tasty starter called "Big Beans"  and I think Gigates,  I bought a pack od seed beans when I was in France and have been growing them each year except when I've had a good year and enough to see us through.   :D   Cheers,   Tony.

Looks like you'll have to sort out the problem with photobucket, Tony

I think I've got the problem sorted ?  After I transferred the snap to here, I removed it from my gallery.  Maybe that was why it went the way it did.  My next snap I will leave on the gallery and see how long it lasts on here ? ? ? cheers,   Tony/

If you delete it from photobucket then that will automatically affect what appears here - as you're not actually storing the photo on here, just a link back to photobucket.

No one is deleting your photos from here except for you!  :)
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Go ahead and eat them Carollan. We did the same with White Lady runners. Lovely they were although mine were picked and used before the end of the season.

If, however, you are very patient you could always use them for seed and grow a bumper crop for free.  ;)
