About the right time for Onions and Shallots?
« on: February 05, 2011, 21:35 »
Apologies if this is a really repeated query but I was planning to plant my onion sets next weekend. I have Stuttgarter giant, Red Baron and a couple of varieties of Shallot. I know about preparing an Onion bed but I was wondering if working some very well rotted horse poop in to the soil tomorrow will be beneficial and will adding anything else (growmore etc) help too. Thanks in advance, Lee.

Shallots can go in right away, but you don't usually plant onions till march

Here's the link to shallots in John's info pages .......the onion link is at the bottom of that page...where there's some feed info as well  :)

Thanks Lesley, I'll take a look. Did you get the seeds I sent? You might be expecting them Monday if not!

I'm growing my onions from seed - they're doing great - a couple of inches already :D

The shallots though, whew, last weekend, the ground was rock-hard to plant them, and this weekend, I'm virtually swimming in mud - its not stopped raining all day. :nowink:

Better luck next weekend - I can only go at weekend because I work all week - sorry guys ;), but I don't trust my hubby to plant them correctly.  He looks after the spuds and tomatoes and anything else that grows in the greenhouse
