How do French and Borlotto beans climb?
« on: February 03, 2011, 22:02 »
Do they climb like runners or like peas, i.e. do they need netting or will a cane do? I mean the tall French beans, of course. I'm doing Cobra and Blauhilde.

Can only speak about Cobra which grow like runners, I grew them last year up a 6 foot tall wigwam of canes.

I grew Blauhilde last year, spiralled its way very well up the canes without the need for netting.

Have a look at the descriptions of the bean on some of the seed merchants' web-sites. That should help.  ;)

Borlotti beans can be used fresh or dried. The dried beans are great in soups, stews and casseroles. I use the frersh beans first and then, towards the end of the season, leave the remaining pods on the plants to dry. When the pods are paper dry, pick and shell the beans, spread the shelled beans out on trays for a few days, then pack into airtight containers and store in a cool dry place.  Good luck!

The real answer to your question, shokkyy, is that Borlotti beans climb.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?
