Couldn't believe the prices of some of the Orpington Pairs at the sale on Saturday.  A very handsome pair of Gold Lace Orpingtons raised £180!!!

Call me oldfashioned but that seems a bit steep even for a pair so lovely as they were :-(

Gold Laced Orpingtons are very rare and highly sought after.  They were only introduced about 5 years ago.

they are only rare because they dont let the stock go .they came to england a few years ago 6yrs ?  they also come in black white blue . I THINK , personally that they are a waste of space even on the show table which is where they belong ,and just another wyandotte x ? ,
now buff  " ordinary " orpingtons are something else especially the banties .... for £180 id have 60 buff banties anyday ,
still alive /............

Know what you mean slowef, breeders charging high prices, is one of my pet hates, i wish one would come on here, and try and justify the prices they charge.

In this particular case, I think it was an auction and so only the buyers are to blame.

I am a hobbyist so looks are my "thing", the joy of having lovely birds to look at is great,  eggs are the bonus.  I would love to own some of these but never at that price.

I have 5 Buff Orpingtons now and a Blue with 12 eggs in due process.

Please Munty tell me where you can get 60 Buff Banties for 180 quid, at 3.00 a throw I will have some :)

It's the people who want to (have to) win, at any price, on the show bench who will put in the big bids at auction.

Hi

I am going to throw a spanner in the works!! I am now seriously breeding salmon favs, and spend a huge amount of time on them - I know I have some superb examples of the standard - (I think I was pretty lucky as well!) Its interesting if you compare how much some pedigree cats go for - from £150 to £300 in some cases. Also I am hearing time and time again about really poor hatching rates all these add to some very expensive birds these days. My point being that there are some birds well worth paying a bit extra for!!

The Bovan Goldlines are what Richyrich was talking about the other day.  They are a cross between a Rhode Island Red and a Light Sussex.  Richy said he had been offered some at £6, so I indeed think we have a bargain!

We got 6 of them, and 6 Dekalb Amberlinks, which were £4.25.  They are apparently a newish strain, from Holland.  I've contacted the breeders in Holland to find out a bit more about them, but apparently are very good egg layers, about 354 eggs a year at their peak.

OH now wants to get more of them.  They all seem like very docile birds, although they were a little nervous today.  I put a pic on the chickens in Lincolnshire thread if you want to see them.
