Cleaning poop from the coop
« on: January 30, 2011, 18:36 »
Not had chickens long - What do people do when it comes to cleaning poop from the coop?  Do you just remove the poopy bedding and leave the clean bedding?  Or remove all bedding and start again?

Thanks!

I tend to de-poop everyday with a poop scoop and then clean it fully every other week or if it's messy before and if it's raining after. I tend to clean out more in Summer than Winter because of the weather and use a dry disinfectant in the winter and a wet one in the summer do it can dry.
As I only have three girls, they aren't that messy to be honest and the daily poop collections keeps it nice and clean.

Hello Tungless,
welcome to the forum and a the wacky world of henaholcs!  I have six bantams.  I have dust extracted wood shavings on the floor of my house that I clean out about once a fortnight.  The shavings are on a large tarpaulin sheet that I can pull out, dump the poo in the compost, hose off and dry.  I have two sheets that I alternate.
Good Luck and happy chicken keeping  :)

Hello and welcome!
We have four girls and clean the lot out once a week.  A good clean out and then a dusting of stalosan (from the farm supplies) around the floor and perch has stopped any mites in over two years.  We use shavings and some shredded paper for nesting. We dust the girls with anti mite and anti louse powder every three weeks, though the experts recommend up to six weeks.  It's just our routine and everyone does their own thing, it seems.  As long as they're happy and not pulling their feathers out, things should be fine.  Enjoy them to the full!

We have 16 Hens, and we use weed roll on the floor, with Comfy Bed  over that, every day I poo pick what i can, and cover with Hemexan and more Comfy bed the rest. We do a Full Clean, Disinfect and Hemexen slurry everything once a month. We usually Have a good old Bonfire and burn the comfy bed/poo pile and put the Ash in the compost pile.
I now have the chicken bug woot i love the Poland's

We don't have bedding as such. The nest box uses shavings, but the rest is hard surfaces. Under the perches is a sloping floor. This is scraped clean every day - takes about a minute.

i lay newspaper under the perches at night, i then  collect up the newspaper and put it on the compost heap.
It really keeps the coop clean and no smell

Good luck with the chooks
